Want a six pack

Every model you see on TV has it: the 6 perfect ripples on the stomach and all the girls just melt at the sight. Now you’ve decided you want to be that guy that just drives the women wild. You’re going to do whatever it takes to get a six pack!

Conventional knowledge leads us to believe that the way to get a six pack is to sit-ups, and lots of them. The truth, however, is that you may develop very strong upper abs, but they may never show. The abs are muscles that hide behind a layer of fat. In order to see them, you must first work on removing the fat that hides these muscles. The proper way to do this is with cardio exercise like jogging, running, riding a bike or using the stair-stepper!

Try jogging at a constant rate for 15 minutes a day for a week. Increase the time by 5 minutes every week. If you think you can go longer or harder, do it. Be sure to avoid eating fattening foods, drinking soda and consuming too much sugar as it will only mask your hard work.

After you’re in a cardio routine, you can begin with the sit-ups or crunches. Get in a routine of doing sit-ups as soon as you wake up and right before you go to bed. Start with, for example, 50 each morning and night, and increase that number every week as well. If your muscles are sore, that’s great; you’re doing your job. The abs and the calf muscles are the only muscles in the body that can be worked day in and day out without worry of damage and need for rest.

Stick with the routine and you will see results in 1 or 2 months. Coupled with a strict diet, you can build your six-pack just in time for summer! If you wish to build more muscle and have a professional workout plan tailored to your needs, visit your local gym and enlist the services of a personal trainer. A membership to a gym is also a great start to losing weight and gaining muscle.

Using therapy lights or sad lights to improve your health

Bringing the sunshine indoors. That is how some people describe the benefits of therapy lights. Scientists believe that simulated bright light has an effect on chemicals in your brain and your skin and can be used to help some conditions. There are many different types of therapy lights so I'm going to described some of them and the disorders they can be used with:

Light boxes (Phototherapy or bright light therapy)

Many therapists have noticed that sitting near a simulated sunlight box can alleviate symptoms for some complaints. The strength of the light should be at least 2,500lux and daily exposure is required. Remember that a medical practitioner must prescribe the strength and type of light used as well as the duration of exposure.

SAD Lights

Otherwise known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or its mildest form 'Winter Blues'. You don't have to be a genius to know that we all feel better during the long sunny days of summer. We seem to have more energy too. You lose some of that enthusiasm in the winter when there are not so many daylight hours. Some people get 'winter blues' which makes them feel lethargic and 'under the weather', with a tendency to overeat. For others this becomes severe enough it to disrupt their lives and cause a lot of upset. It can also affect the way we behave.

The symptoms usually start at the beginning of the winter season and begin to get better when spring arrives in March and April. It may not be necessary to use light SAD therapy daily during the winter months and advice from a trained professional is advised.

Jetlag and Sleep Disorders

Where the circadian rhythms or body clock of the brain have been affected by periods of sleep deprivation or extended night or daytime hours. Flying over time zones can have this effect. The light box can simulate the difference between waking hours and sleep or night time and helps to re-adjust the body and brain into rhythm quickly.

Alzheimer's and Dementia

A regular topic in many research papers on Alzheimer's Disease is the damage that happens to the part of the brain that controls the circadian rhythms. The combination of damaged nerve pathways and poor eyesight as you get older can mean that indoor levels of light are not enough to identify the difference between daytime and night time. Experiments using therapy lights and light boxes have found that they can help maintain Alzheimer sufferers' rest and activity cycles for longer.

UVB/UVA1 light

The same technology that is used for sunbeds in tanning shops can also help to ease stubborn patches of psoriasis, vitiligo, stretch marks and pale scars. The light must be focussed on the affected patch without unwanted exposure to normal skin.

Coloured-light therapy or Intense Pulsed Light

These types of therapy lights use filtered floodlights to bathe the skin in light of different colors. Different color filters have proven better for different disorders:

Blue: is used to destroy the bacteria that cause acne.

Green: is used to treat pigment irregularities e. g. liver spots, age spots

Yellow: for vascular conditions such as thread veins and rosacea.

Combination green and yellow: smoothes away fine lines and wrinkles.

Red: has been found to be effective in the relief of headaches and, when concentrated in one area, for the relief of arthritic pain.

Low-level laser light (Ruby and KTP) therapy

Developed to help reduce patches of discoloured skin, such as birthmarks or moles. Laser light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the skin causing it to break up in darker areas and help to make it look more normal.

The above two systems of therapy lights can be combined and used to remove areas where the person believes they have too much hair.

Information in this article is for advice only. Anyone wishing to try these treatments should contact their medical practitioner first.

Low back pain-affecting your life and work

The low back pain is the second most common ailment affecting 80% of the general United States population at some point in life. The pain may either be acute or chronic and is usually caused by a variety of diseases and disorders of the lumbar spine. Low Back pain is usually accompanied by sciatica. Sciatica is a pain that involves the sciatic nerve and affects the lower back, the back of the thighs and buttocks.

Causes and Symptoms of Low back pain

The patient of low back pain may experience two types of pain, primarily - acute and chronic. The pain is symptomatic and can be caused by the following reasons:

Acute Pain:

A sprain or a muscle tear, which can be aggravated by heavy lifting or extended use of back muscles within 24 hours of the injury, leading to muscle spasms or soreness. Usually improves when you provide rest to the affected area.

Chronic Pain:

This pain may have several causes like -

1.Mechanical Obesity, pregnancy, bad postures while bending, or stooping causes strain on the lower back muscles.

2.Malignancy Low back pain that is not relieved even after a night's rest, maybe caused by a tumor in the cauda equine (the roots of the spinal nerves controlling sensation in and movement of the legs), or cancer of the prostate, breasts or lungs, maybe caused because of a history of smoking, sudden weight loss or old age.

3.Herniated Spinal Disk When the spinal disk begins to bulge outward between the vertebrae. This is a common cause of chronic back pain in adults.

4.Ankylosing Spondylitis Pain caused while lying down or sitting; improves when the patient starts moving, is commonly seen in males between the age group of 16-35 years.

5.Psychogenic Back pain which may be induced due to an exaggerated minor injury or that may be usually prolonged leading to somatoform disorder or other psychiatric disturbances.

6.Lower Back Pain with Leg Involvement When the back pain radiates down the leg, the sciatic nerve is usually irritated by herniated disks, tumors of the cauda equina, abscesses in the space between the spinal cord and its covering, spinal stenosis, and compression fractures. Some patients may also experience weakness or lack of feeling, along with pain in the leg.

Stress inevitable but treatable

Lifestyle in the 21st century is very stressful. Stress nowadays is not only overwhelming but it can pose a serious effect on one's health. Almost everyone knows how it feels like to be stressed, stomachaches, headaches, and sweaty palms are all symptoms of this condition. These are normal body reactions to threats, changes in routines, or challenges. Chronic or prolonged stress caused by work, relationship problems, or financial concerns may hamper emotional balance and increase the risk of chronic illness. Ongoing stress may increase the chances that certain ailments may develop. In addition, chronic stress may weaken the immune system and make it more susceptible to many forms of infections. Stress however, is an inevitable part of life and may cause one to be physically and emotionally drained.

Here are additional signs that indicate that one is might be stressed out:

feeling down, edgy, or tired

laughing or crying without any reason

blaming others for bad things that happened

wanting to be alone at all times

not being able to see the positive side of certain situations

not enjoying activities that were used to enjoy

feeling annoyed to people or activities

feelings like one has too many things to do

Many stressed individuals try to self-medicate to distract one's self from by engaging in other activities while stressed. A lot of them however use the wrong method for stress relief. They tend to overeat, drink too much alcohol or coffee, or use illegal drugs. These habits may bring temporary relief but fail to alleviate stress in any meaningful way. In the long run individuals who engage in these activities may only heighten physical and emotional stress.

Exercise and nutritious diets are safe and effective ways to improve mental and physical health. Many medical studies point out that exercise, especially aerobic exercise (jogging, brisk walking, and jumping rope) as one of the best method for stress relief. This is possible because these activities promote of the production of endogenous morphines or endorphins. These are substances that is produced by the brain that might work as the body's natural pain-killers. It said that endorphins might be capable of elevating one's mood, self-esteem, and mental functioning.

Exercise should be done properly and in moderation to achieve health improvements. Individuals who want to improve their health don't have to train like marathoners or even join a gym. Strength training (push-ups, pull-ups, etc) coupled with 30 minutes of jogging or brisk walking can keep your body toned and improve metabolism. These regimens can be done with little or no equipment at all. Many health experts claim that the key to improved health is not intensity or using sophisticated equipments but continuous physical activity. Exercising properly can make people feel better, have more energy, and become less prone to stress. Before engaging in physical activities and making adjustments in food regimens, individuals are encouraged to seek the advise of health experts. They may prepare a workout routines that are recommended for individuals based on their specific health conditions and fitness goals.

If exercise and diet adjustments do not work, stressed individuals may use medications for stress relief. However, before taking them stressed individuals should consult doctors to clarify drug interactions and side effects that may occur while under medication. Understanding stress is essential for treatment and improvements in one's health.

Choosing a handheld massager for relief from back pain

Handheld Massager reminds us of the fact that massage is one of the oldest forms of healing. In olden times, muscular pains and strains were treated with different oils by expert masseurs. The Chinese, Indians and Persians are known to have used this healing form for ages, and massage is still used in these cultures most prolifically. In today’s context, it can be said that massage is one of the most popular forms of therapies for chronic conditions like lower back pain, joint and muscular pains. Massage also helps alleviate mental stress and depression. To make things convenient, Handheld Massager are doing the job that a masseur does.

No longer safe bullying happens on the internet too

Bullying, according to some, is sort of a rite of passage. A source of stress and anxiety, as well as fear, that everyone has to endure at one point or another. The advent of the Internet and better, more advanced communications technologies has not really changed this, though the virtual world has given bullied children a place to go where they won't be targeted for being physically weak. For most, the Internet is a place where one's ideas and ability to express ideas solidly is more valuable than muscle fitness and raw power. However, that may all be changing with the times, arguably due to the Internet itself slowly changing into a more and more tangible community.

The Internet has long been home to a number of “virtual communities” that mirror those found in the real world. These communities are often based on a common interest shared by members, such as video games, anime, certain genres of books, or cult TV shows. A little surfing can lead someone to find forums, chat rooms, and wikis (databases that can be edited and added to by the community itself, rather than a single administrator or group) dedicated to a wide range of topics. This virtual environment of relative safety and anonymity has afforded bullied people a safe place to express their opinions, often using these sites as a means of stress relief and social interaction at the same time. However, one alarming thing to note is that, as these communities grow larger, their evolution starts to mirror the evolution of real-life communities.

Elitism is a major problem, particularly in larger, less-monitored communities. The mentality of making new members pay their dues by taking abuse from established members is prevalent in a number of Internet communities. Even if there is no outright elitism, it may still manifest in some form, usually with older members telling younger members to just shrug off the abuse and stress associated with one of the less friendly members of the community. Abusive members who have been established for a long time tend to be removed only with difficulty, particularly because most of the members in power have already gotten used to them and feel that newer members will have to do the same.

However, bullying via the Internet reaches further than that. Stress and social anxiety can be effectively reinforced on the Internet as well, especially with more and more people engaging in activities such as blogging and maintaining personal websites. While most people who set up blogs and personal sites are aware that they are risking being attacked by damaging or derogatory remarks, they are often ill-prepared for those same remarks. The fact that the Internet makes it all too easy to launch such attacks both anonymously and openly makes it a particularly inviting means of “putting someone down.” This was the case in Japan, when schoolgirls “cyber-bullied” a fellow student via attacks on her personal website; acts which prompted a violent response, resulting in the infamy of the “Nevada-tan” persona.

While not all victims of bullying turn violent, the potential damage done by this to social and psychological development can be devastating. It can lead to a number of negative behaviors, including the formation of an inferiority complex and, in rare cases, excessively violent outbursts.

Gall bladder back pain

:
The gall bladder back pain is usually caused due to the inflammation or improper functioning of gall bladder, which is a small pear-shaped organ on the underside of the liver, in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Its main function is to collect and store bile, which is used by the body to digest fats. Bile is made in the liver cells (hepatocytes) and consists of water, electrolytes, bile acids, phospholipids and bilirubin. It assists in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K.

Causes Of Gall Bladder Problems

Gall bladder diseases and problems are fairly common and affect both men and women. The symptoms can vary from indigestion and nausea to vomiting and pain in the right upper abdomen. This pain also radiates to the lower back, resulting in gall bladder back pain. Other symptoms include:
1.Fever due to inflammation in the gall bladder
2.Abdominal bloating
3.Severe heartburn and gas
4.Jaundice
5.Diarrhea

Some of the gall bladder problems are caused by:
1.Production of toxic bile by the liver
2.Inadequate production of bile
3.Excess amount of cholesterol in bile, leading to the formation of gall bladder stones
4.Infection in gall bladder
5.Hormonal changes during pregnancy
6.Blood disorders or infections

The lower back pain can be attributed to a gall bladder disorder problem that results in gall bladder pain called biliary colic. Biliary colic occurs when gallstones block the small duct that drains bile to the small intestine. Gallstones or biliary calculi are small stones formed from a mixture of cholesterol, bile pigment and calcium salts. The formation of gallstones is a very common disorder and affects approximately 15% of the people at the age of around 50. However, in most cases, complication and infections don’t arise until gallstones block a bile duct, which then leads to severe pain lasting from 30 min to several hours. In such circumstances, you must undertake an ultra sound test to confirm the presence of gallstones and then get the proper treatment with the help of a doctor.

The evolution of birth control options

Things, by virtue of the competitive environments they are thrust into, have little recourse but to adapt and evolve over

time. This is true for everything from predatory animals to tobacco commercials, and everything else in between. At the same

time, anything that is being marketed to the average consumer is likely to be competing with other products that are probably

just as effective. The nature of the modern, global market is that a brand of clothing from Paris can be just as likely to

draw in high-class customers as that radical designer in Kyoto's work. In essence, the consumer demand for more choices and

options for customizing their purchases to their specifications has forced companies to adapt, making their products open to

“acceptable alteration” more than ever before. Birth control methods, particularly for women, have also evolved along these

lines.

Originally, birth control of the pharmaceutical sort was limited. You had options on what brand to pick, but most of them

worked along similar lines anyway. They all worked by altering hormone levels, but had little room for things that women

might have had to consider, such as their cycle. Dosage was also generally universal, though this was clearly something that

needed to be fixed, since what is fine for one woman might be too strong a dose for another.

However, evolution is a powerful force, and it has managed to make even birth control adapt. Now, more than ever, women have

options on what pill to take, how big a dose that pill actually is, and curtail and limit other effects on the female

physiology that were ignored before. There are now pills that are designed to help fight the hormones that cause skin

problems such as acne, while others reduce the problem of withdrawal bleeding. As such, to compete in the current business

environment and grab a fair share of the market, pharmaceutical companies need to entice their female clients with more than

just a partial guarantee that pregnancy is not going to be a problem. Like the clothing and accessories that the stereotype

so often says women spend hours a day mixing and matching, “the pill” can now be suited for the individual woman.

There are, naturally, positive and negative effects to this sort of pharmaceutical phenomenon. The obvious positive is that

women can now pick a pill that is better suited for their particular situation and physiology. This means that factors that

cannot be accurately generalized, such as hormonal reactions, the ovulation cycle, and other physiological details can be

taken into consideration when taking birth control. This means that they no longer have to adhere to the original 21/7 scheme

that the older formulas followed, which is now being considered as an already outmoded attempt to echo the average natural

ovulation cycle.

However, there are some negative factors that need to be considered. This opens up a slightly larger risk of incorrect birth

control prescription. Since the pills can be chosen depending on a woman's hormone levels or certain things she wants

eliminated, such as bleeding or hormone-related acne, there is a slight chance that the wrong pill might be given. There is

also the present risk of a woman switching medications in the middle of a regimen. Such a move can be a major problem if

things like what hormones the pills trigger and what effects they might have on physiology are not considered.

Side effects of some drugs that are lowering blood pressure part one

Lowering blood pressure is a condition that is below the normal expected for an individual in a given environment. Blood pressure differs deeply with activity, age, medications, and underlying medical conditions

Some of the Drugs have some side effects that can cause lower blood pressure include blood pressure drugs, diuretics (water pills), heart medications (especially calcium antagonists-nifedipine/Procardia, beta blockers-propranolol/Inderal and others), depression medications (such as amitriptylene/Elavil), and alcohol.

Diuretics — diuretics are a big evil of lower blood pressure. It could cause lack of potassium in your body. Usually after taking diuretics, patient may suffer from weakness, leg cramps, or being tiredness however, it is not permanent. A patient can avoid these problems by taking some potassium tablets with diuretics. Diuretics such as amiloride (Midamar), spironolactone (Aldactone) or triamterene (Dyrenium) are called "potassium sparing" agents and provide equal of amount of potassium to your body. A lower blood pressure patient with diabetes can have some problems with diuretics. It may increase the blood sugar level. So, it is recommended to take permission from doctor before taking it.

Beta-blockers — patients of lower blood pressure feel insomnia, cold hands and feet, tiredness or depression, a slow heartbeat or symptoms of asthma after taking Beta-blockers. Patients of diabetes need to care while taking this medicine.

ACE inhibitors — a required amount of ACE inhibitors not effect badly to lower blood pressure patient but the drugs, such as captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), lisinopril (Zestril or Prinivil), may cause a skin rash; loss of taste; a chronic dry, hacking cough; and in rare instances, kidney damage.

Angiotensin II receptor blockers — another evil for the patients of lower blood pressure. A patient may feel occasional faintness, so take care, and ask your doctor before taking the drug.

Life after cancer treatment - tips from a survivor

Life after Cancer Treatment

Cancer sucks. When I was 4 years old, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. The experts said she had less than a year. I remember being on the street, crying, on the roof of my dad’s car, screaming ‘MOM!!!!!’ to the hospital, while she waived at us from a window way up.

My mom had 6 sisters, 3 died of cancer. She also had 7 brothers. One of them died of cancer. She’s been to more operations and treatments than anyone I know. Her breasts were amputated, as well as her ovaries and uterus. She also had something about her colon and one simple cosmetic thing on her face. (The latter had beauty purposes)

Right now, as I write this, I’m 22 and very happy to announce that my mom is still alive and kicking. Awesome isn’t?

Here’s what she says to me all the time:

‘I didn’t care what the doctors said…I had to see you grow up’.

You’d be surprised if you saw her. For her age, she has a nice figure. She kicks ass in skiing and is very energetic, all the time. Since my mom is a walking monument of survival, I decided to ask her what her views on cancer are and how she managed to survive and maintain a smile all these years.

When I asked her about her ‘survival techniques’ I was pretty surprised. Not only for the ‘common sense’ type of answers that she gave me, but also for the medical arguments she has to back them up. She has a Biology degree and I’ve seen her, first hand, walking the talk. For these reasons, I feel the obligation to spread her word and let others know.

Tips from a cancer survivor

The following are tips. Your goal should be to understand them and then apply as many as possible.

Eat healthy, NATURAL food

Ready made food is the worst. It has too many preservatives. If you’re the kind of person pre-set for cancer, this is like an accelerator in a time bomb. You also want to avoid canned food. I know it’s easy to make, but a couple of minutes more and extra pennies will save you much pain in the long run.

Instead, what you do want to do is eat a lot of Antioxidants. Not to beat the old dead horse, but you have to eat fruits and vegetables EVERY DAY. Not so much a lot, but EVERYDAY. This isn’t hard. Make it a habit that the first thing you have in the morning is a fruit. Like an Apple, orange, banana…or whatever.

If you don’t like fruit, put the fruit in a blender with milk and a bit of sugar or yogurt and start your day with a smoothie. Also, whenever you’re hungry and are about to prepare yourself a snack; try grabbing a fruit instead. While you’re waiting for that pasta, have an apple.

Is very important that when you’re stomach is close to empty, you grab a fruit, or a vegetable. It’ll get digested fast and easy and it will provide your body with a nice amount of Antioxidants.

If you don’t like vegetables, cook them. Onion and broccoli suck. BUT, soup with onion, tomato and a nice recipe could be amazing! There are plenty of books on healthy recipes out there. Eat salads too on a daily basis.

Also, when cooking, choose your oil with care. Use very little of it and make sure is mono-saturated like olive oil. Olive oil is awesome by the way. It has Hydroxytyrosol. It is a very powerful Antioxidant. Also, soy oil is pretty good too. These things have Omega 3 and 6.

Note: The topic of Antioxidants is very, very important. You must understand what they are, how they work and how they affect the human body.

Drink lots of water. LOTS! All the time!!

For example, when you’re eating dinner, rather than complimenting it with can juice, drink water. When you’re thirsty and feel like sipping a pop, drink water. Just like eating a fruit when the stomach is empty, the same goes for water.

An amazing habit that I have the pleasure to have pioneered, is to everyday, first thing in the morning, right before the morning coffee, have an apple and a glass of water. Also, bring a bottle of water to work/school, and keep refilling it all day long.

No Alcohol

It’s ok to drink alcohol every now and then. Actually, one of the reasons wine is recommended is because it has Antioxidants.

But, by no alcohol, I mean don’t get wasted all the time.

Sleep well

Sleeping is so key. When you’re sleeping, your brain is producing chemicals that help your body. Plus, your whole system is resting and getting stronger. Plus it just feels good, so make sure you have a comfortable bed and sleep as much as you need to.

Have Fun

Simply stated: ‘Do whatever YOU want’

Go out on Friday night and have a blast with your friends. Learn a musical instrument and jam with people. Learn a new language, travel, walk around nature, go skiing, and sky diving. Just do the things that you enjoy. These things are like sources of happiness and well-being. They offer nothing but benefits.

Have Goals

This is something incredibly important. If you have a mayor purpose, something to look forward to, you’ll be much fulfilled just doing the required work to achieve your goal. It is not so much the destination but the path that’s important.

How about helping a charity? Or starting a business? Learning a new language and going to another country for 3 months? Plant a new garden on your yard and see it grow.

From personal experience, I must say that one of the major things that gave my mom the fire to fight was the following statement:

To see her son grow up. Right now, she says she’s in a stage of her life where she’s setting new goals. We’re actually looking into investing in Real Estate.

Trust me, goals and projects that are meaningful to you will keep you alive. So start right now. What is that one thing that you’ve always wanted to do?

Exercise

Do it a little bit, everyday. Adapt the exercise to your particular situation. My mom has a little machine with a couple of marbles and things in her room. She works like 10 minutes everyday. Only a couple exercises. She also swims a lot and skis. Again, do things that will keep you in shape. Try yoga out. Walk, Bike, Dance, Stay active.

Have a positive attitude

A good mental state is so key. Living a life with your emotions balanced is so awesome. Choose the people around you very carefully. Avoid whiners and the chicken littles of life. Make sure you’re around positive people that will help you out and motivate you.

Sharing time with people that also have goals and that want to be with you to share the fun of being alive is very rewarding. People that have your same state of mind and are motivated by the same activities will add massive value to your life.

Love

Experience love, develop your spiritual energy, Love yourself and give yourself importance. If you don’t like yourself, do something so that you do. Achieve something. Loving yourself will make sure that others love you. That way you’ll be surrounded by awesome people and have a loving special someone.

Making love is also strongly recommended. Do it often. Please your partner. Have fun. As a healing mechanism, and happiness generator, it has no match.

Be realistic and optimistic

Deal with problems in a realistic way. Be effective and quick. Seek help if you have to. At the same time though, don’t let bad things take over you. There’s always a solution. Even if it means dropping the problem because is something out of your control.

Obstacles, in anything, are a part of life. You learn something every time you make a mistake or have a set-back. Just keep going.

Be financially smart

Don’t buy into debt. Make sure you live within your means. Then, expand your means. Don’t work too much either. Invest in your tranquility. Give yourself pleasure, but be careful with debt.

Learn to manage your money.

It’s been said that a lot of people under stress and that develop diseases are suffering of cancer of the wallet. Again, use your money in smart ways. Think of the future.

So there you have it. Simple isn’t it? I really hope, deep down inside, that this article helps someone out.

Std it could happen to you

Whether we admit or not, we are living in a sexually permissive society. We see it everyday. Take a look at the music videos of popular artists with provocative suggestions of sex, as well as films touted to be artistically produced and directed. Even advertising makes use of subliminal messages of seduction to promote their products. There is really nothing wrong with sex if it's done safely and responsibly.

Boys and girls will normally get curious and interested about sex as they go through physical and emotional changes during puberty. And due to media and internet access, our youth are easily exposed to a lot of possibilities about sex. The risks of acquiring Sexually Transmitted Diseases or STD are high in this age group. It is the responsibility of the parents to strike a balance between teaching their teens about responsible sexual health while, at the same time, making them understand that the knowledge about safe sex does not give them a license to engage in sex with every willing party and at every available opportunity.

What is Sexually Transmitted Disease?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases or STD are diseases caused by viral or bacterial infections that can be transmitted through sexual contact. STD can affect sexually active men and women of all ages and backgrounds. People who are aware of STD may experience social, emotional and psychological stress due to guilt or embarrassment. But there is more to STD than stress and shame. These diseases are serious sexual health problems that may cause permanent damage such as infertility. If not given proper attention, STDs may even lead to serious complications and even death, as morbidly shown in the thousands of AIDS cases around the world.

But the good news is, STD can be treated. The spread of STD is due to the common misconception that only people who engage in sexual intercourse get the infection. STD, like herpes or genital warts, can be acquired through skin-to-skin contact with an infected area or sore. The myth that one cannot get infected through oral and anal sex is what it is --- a myth. Viruses or bacteria that cause STD can enter the body through tiny cuts or tears in the mouth and anus, as well as the genitals.

The fact that it is difficult to tell whether a person is infected or not makes STD spread easily. People who are infected may not even know that they have STD, thus, endangering their partners with the infection without even realizing it. Sometimes, it takes a long time before any signs or symptoms of STD appear.

The following are some of the most common STDs that affect sexually active individuals:

Chlamydia – is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacterial infection. Chlamydia often infects the cervix in women while the urethra, rectum and eyes can be infected in both sexes.

Gonorrhea - is a bacterial infection that is sexually transmitted and can infect the cervix, urethra, rectum, anus and throat. It is possible to be infected with gonorrhea and have no obvious symptoms.

Crabs or Pubic Lice - are small, crab shaped blood-sucking parasites that live on pubic hair but can also be found wherever there is hair such as in the armpits, on the body, and even in facial hair such as the eyebrows. Crabs or pubic lice can also survive away from the body and may be found in clothes, bedding and towels.

Genital Herpes - is caused by the virus called herpes simplex and can affect the mouth, genital area, the skin around the anus, and the fingers.

Genital Warts – are small fleshy growths found anywhere on a man or woman's genital area, or on different parts of the body, such as the hands and anus. If a woman has warts on her cervix, this may cause slight bleeding or, very rarely, an unusual and colored vaginal discharge.

Syphilis - is a bacterial infection that is sexually transmitted and may also be passed from an infected mother to her unborn child. Syphilis has several stages. The primary and secondary stages are very infectious.

STD Risk Factors

After knowing the types of STDs that commonly infect sexually active individuals, it is best to be informed about the following risk factors associated with sex-related illnesses:

· Curiosity about sex among young people almost always lead them to sexual experimentation. The younger people start to have sex, the greater their risk becoming infected with an STD.

· Promiscuity or having lots of different sex partners increases the risk of getting STD infections than those who stay with the same partner.

· Lack of sexual responsibility or being unprotected during sex exposes individuals to possible risks of getting STD infections.

Prevention and Treatment

Just like with other medical conditions, preventing Sexually Transmitted Diseases is much easier than treating them. Abstinence from all types of sexual contact may be the only way to prevent STD. But people do not have to deprive themselves of sex as long as they remain faithful to their partners or at least, try to use condoms and other birth control methods that also serve as sexual safety aids. Other birth control methods may help prevent pregnancy but only latex condoms can lessen the risk of getting an STD.

People who are sexually active should consider getting regular gynecological or male genital examinations to give doctors not just the opportunity to check for STD while they are still in their earliest and most treatable stage. Sexually active people should be well-formed about STDs and the various ways to protect themselves.

People should always be honest about their sexual history especially during consultations with doctors. The more you hold back, the more chances you allow STD to develop and cause more serious damage.

There is a delicate harmony that balances guilt-free sexual health awareness, self-worth, and social responsibility. Parents need to be more willing to hold open discussions with their children. It is the duty of the parents to prepare their children in the matters of physical, emotional and social dimensions of sexual health and its consequences. STD is a serious sexual disease. Remember: It could happen to you.

Defining the complexities of sexual health

The youth of today enjoy much freedom when it comes to self-expression as compared to the old days when parents decide for their children even to the point of choosing their lifetime partners. Although some families remained conservative and traditional, the rest of society adapts to a fast-paced lifestyle where convention is out of the the rule and individuality is the name of the game.

In this sexually-permissive culture, it is important to consider what lies ahead for you and for your loved ones, and how you can protect each other from getting Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD).

Awareness of sexual health issues is very important. More than just the absence of the disease or its dysfunction and infirmities, it is also a state of physical, emotional, psychological and social well-being with regards to one's sexuality. Addressing sexual health issues involves a complex web of factors such as attitude, behavior, genes, environment, and economy.

Sexual health also deals with problems such as STD, HIV, pregnancy, abortion, infertility, cancer, and a wide range of sexual dysfunctions. Those who are in a relationship must not automatically consider an infected partner as being unfaithful. One must learn to practice a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships and this can be achieved if the sexual rights of every individual is respected and protected.

Do not be deceived by mere appearances. Even the healthiest-looking person can be infected by STD. It's not easy to tell if the person beside you has STD, or other illnesses for that matter, just by the way that person looks and acts. There are STDs that do not show any obvious signs. Symptoms can be very subtle that the person infected may not even know it. It is very important that aside from your regular health check-up, you should also take special attention in knowing your own body especially when you are healthy. So that if any changes take place such as skin infections or sores, as well as any unusual discharge or pain while urinating, it will be easier for you to recognize these signs and symptoms because you already know how your body is like when healthy.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases are diseases caused by by viruses, bacteria and parasites, which can easily be transmitted through body contact during sex. There are at least 25 different sexually transmitted diseases which can be spread by sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral sex.

Sometimes, STD takes a long time to display any kind of symptoms. The following are some of the most common STD that affect sexually active individuals: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Bacterial Vaginosis, Crabs or Pubic Lice, Epididymitis, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, Gut Infections, Hepatitis, Molluscum, Non-Specific Urethritis, Scabies, Syphilis, Thrush, Trichomonas Vaginosis, Balanitis.

Early detection and treatment of STD is very important to avoid serious infections that may lead to long-term or permanent damage. When left untreated, STD may cause infertility and can be passed on from a pregnant mother to her unborn child. Sexually Transmitted Diseases can be easily passed onto sexual partners and can aid in the transmission of HIV.

One of the surest way to avoid STD is by sexual abstinence. But you don't have to be chaste just to be free of this dreaded STD. The practice of safe sex can greatly help in minimizing risk from STD. Consult with your professional health care provider for advice on getting tested for STD and other sexual health concerns.

Hoodia is a medicinal plant noted for its appetite-suppressant qualities

Hoodia Gordonii contains a molecule that is predicted to be up as potent as glucose in sending signals to the brain that the body is in a state of satiety, or tells the brain that it is not hungry. Manufacturers stress that Hoodia has “proven so promising as the Millennium weight loss miracle drug, with its natural appetite suppressant properties”.

The plant’s active compound in Hoodia is called "the P57", and its main effect is it makes you feel full. P57 works by mimicking the effect glucose has on the nerve cells in the brain, which in effect tells you that you are not hungry, effectively curbing your appetite.

The reported key effects of Hoodia Gordonii include a reduced interest in food, delay in feeling the need to eat again, a feeling of fullness, and a general feeling of well-being. Hoodia is not a stimulant. There are no known side effects of using Hoodia. The use of this appetite suppressant began in early 2004 and the results have proven promising and were found it to be of tremendous help to the overall approach to weight loss.

While there are presently no known hoodia side effects, daily use of hoodia diet pills may prove to be dangerous in the long term as we learn more about them and their effects on dieters. If one could recall, when ephedra was first introduced it was considered completely safe until adverse side effects were discovered and it was ultimately banned. Granted however, hoodia is much different than ephedra since ephedra is a stimulant. The point is that it could prove to be harmful in the future. However, this fear would still seem unlikely today, but hoodia supplements haven't been around long enough to say that they are completely safe for long-term use.

Hoodia’s negative effects on women who are pregnant or nursing have not yet been fully established. If you are pregnant or nursing, you should probably avoid ingesting any products that contain it. However, if you insist on trying any hoodia products, you should exercise extreme caution and preferably should consult a physician first.

At present, there are only two known potential hoodia side effects at this time, which would be the loss of money and loss of appetite. Authentic hoodia gordonii diet pills cost around $60 per bottle and lasts two to three weeks if taken regularly. One could readily spend up to $120 for a one-month supply, and prices are unlikely to come down anytime soon.

It is also important to keep in mind that some medical weight loss experts remain unsure and would not recommend Hoodia gordonii to obese or overweight patients. According to Adrienne Youdim, MD, medical director of the Comprehensive Weight Loss Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Michael Steelman, MD, chairman of the board of trustees for the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, they infer that there is no published scientific data to support its use.

In light of a number of reports of the proliferation of fake or sub-standard Hoodia products, consumers should also look for a certified copy of a CITES and USDA permit from manufacturers and distributors of Hoodia products, or they could also ask for a report from an independent testing lab which has conducted scientific analysis on the product, to attest that they have been able to authenticate the presence of Hoodia gordonii.

Currently, there are four independent labs which are conducting tests to verify Hoodia gordonii levels in consumer products. The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) is also formulating a Hoodia Standard, which is in response to further scrutiny by the Federal Trade Commission of the Hoodia industry and complaints by customers of fake Hoodia products being sold in the market.

The common treatments for acne

The skin is often looked at by people as an outward sign of a person's hygiene and health. Subconsciously, human beings tend to associate smooth, clear skin with being in good physical condition. Good skin is also perceived as one of the most obvious signs of physical beauty.

The preoccupation with skin care has led to a boom in the skin care product industry. These skin care products are marketed to cater to the large market that demands a variety of preparations to treat dry skin, control oily skin, and even to “reverse” the aging process. Today, manufacturers of beauty products have expanded their beauty line to include concoctions to cure skin infections. The products that are usually bought to control skin infections usually include those that are supposed to treat adult acne (acne rosacea) and teenage acne (acne vulgaris). Adult acne and teenage acne are two entirely different things, though most scientists believe the root causes are essentially the same. There are currently no concrete findings on what the ultimate cause of acne is, though most studies point to bacteria being the most prevalent factor in both rosacea and vulgaris problems. The single, definitive cause has yet to be found but the countless studies have shown the medical world that there are a number of possible solutions to both acne rosacea and acne vulgaris. These treatments promise to help alleviate the problem of acne, as well as alleviate the social anxiety that people with severe cases of acne experience.

Skin infections like acne rosacea and teenage acne are typically caused by bacterial infections in the skin. Among the many core ingredients of the medications used to treat acne and similar bacterial infections is benzoyl peroxide. In the case of acne, benzoyl peroxide works by attacking the bacteria, effectively attempting to cut off the acne at the source. However, benzoyl peroxide is a potent compound and people with sensitive skin can develop redness, rashes, and other side effects that can add to one's social anxiety, rather than help relieve it. Medically speaking, adults often find it harder to tolerate benzoyl peroxide, as compared to teenagers. An alternative for acne medication (and the subsequent relief from social anxiety) can come in the form of treatments that make use of salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid works on acne in a different manner from benzoyl peroxide. While the peroxide compound works by targeting the bacterial infections behind acne, salicylic acid functions as an exfoliant. The acid works by peeling away layers of the skin, subsequently also peeling away the acne gradually. The acid is considered to be milder than the peroxide, though it can still have side effects. Additionally, salicylic acid is not as effective an acne treatment option as benzoyl peroxide, simply because it lacks the raw chemical potency of the peroxide.

There are some dermatologists that suggest combination treatments as a way to relieve acne. The approach works by having people apply salicylic acid during the day time, as it is the compound that has a lower chance of inducing side effects. The benzoyl peroxide is then applied at night, before sleeping. This reduces the chances that the side effects would interfere with the patient's daily life, as well as reduce the chances of the peroxide bleaching clothing.

In your typical pharmacy, there are various treatments for acne and other skin infections, and not all of them will contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. That doesn't mean that they don't work as well, it's just that they probably work differently from the aforementioned types of treatments. Whether one decides to take an over-the-counter treatment or go for a prescription, the important thing to remember is that once the acne has been effectively removed, then working on relieving the social anxiety can begin.

Do s and don ts of wearing perfume

The perfume fragrances you wear can cause people to be attracted to you or, unfortunately, to flee from you! You should carefully choose perfumes that enhance the space around you. Be careful not to offend others with fragrances that are too strong. Here are some quick perfume tips on choosing and wearing fragrances.

Choosing a Perfume Fragrance

Find a fragrance that complements your skin and natural aroma of your body. The scent should be subtle enough to not invade anyone else's "personal space" but pleasant enough that others will want to stay around you. Perfume is meant to enhance your personality, attire, and overall being.

When you visit the fragrance department in a department store, sample perfumes by spraying a couple of fragrances on your skin in areas located far apart from one another. For example, spray one type on your hand and the other on your upper arm. Don't try spraying on more than two fragrances in a single trip. Then, leave the store or at least the perfume section for a few minutes to smell the fragrances on your skin. This will allow you to smell the scents without them blending with others from the fragrance section.

Try each scent directly on your skin to be sure it's the perfect match. The fragrance should blend well with your normal body aroma, as well as the scents of your clothing detergent, shampoos, and makeup.

If you think you've found the perfect perfume for you, wait a day before buying. Try on a sample of only that particular perfume from the department store and then leave it on for a day. Be sure it doesn't lose its scent during the day, change scents, or cause any allergies or headaches. Wearing it for a day should reveal all of these.

Do's of Wearing Perfume

If you have dry skin, wear extra perfume. The oils in your skin, or lack thereof, can enhance or weaken the scent. When it's cold out, wear extra perfume. Cold weather tends to weaken the scent as well. When, buying new perfume, don't base your decision on what works for someone else. Try it out on your own skin first. Everyone's skin reacts differently to a scent.

The best time to apply perfume is right after a shower or bath. After bathing, your skin pores will be open and will soak up the perfume's fragrance. Also when bathing, use non-deodorized soap where the perfume will be applied. Soaps and deodorants can affect how the perfume will smell on your skin; the mixture won't always be pleasant!

When applying perfume, dab it in unusual places where it will stay warm and keep its scent longer. It can be applied on the inside of the elbow, on the wrist, neck, stomach, cleavage, and back of the knees.

Don'ts of Wearing Perfume

While there are many positives to wearing perfume, there are few things to avoid. One involves perfume and jewelry. Certain types of jewelry, such as costume or pearl jewelry, can become discolored due to perfume alcohols. Some jewelry can also be stripped of its outer coating. When wearing perfume with this type of jewelry, apply it away from the jewelry.

Don't use only one perfume year round. Test out various perfumes during seasonal changes to see which ones work best in the hot or cool temperatures. Different fragrances are affected by temperatures when it comes to scent intensity.

Never apply perfume behind the ears. It can blend with skin secretions and create a bad smell. Also, don't spray perfume onto light-colored clothes because it can turn the fabric yellow.

When buying perfumes online, try out the same brand and scent in a local store first to be sure it's right for you. You can often find great perfumes and men's colognes such as Adidas, Antonio Puig, Anucci, Byblos, Britney Spears, Bulgari, Chanel, Capucci, Cartier, and more at online shopping stores.

These stores carry a wide supply of fragrances, even at wholesale prices. You can also shop for other great items while you're there including sporting goods products, computers, DVDs, pet supply items, office supply products, tools, car items, electronics, jewelry, and more.

Use these tips to find that perfect perfume for you and start drawing people to you with your lovely scent!

Is your home hazardous to your health how indoor air pollution may trigger illness

:
We tend to think of our homes as our havens--safe places to go in order to retreat from the assault of modern life. For the most part this is true. But there is a hidden danger lurking in the seemingly tranquil and protective confines of our houses, and it’s something we ought to sit up and notice. That hidden danger is the quality of indoor air.

The act of breathing is so natural we don’t even realize we’re doing it, but what about the air that we take in every time we inhale? When was the last time you stopped to think about the quality of the air you were taking into your lungs, transmitting deep down into the cells of your body?

If you were recently standing on a polluted corner of a busy city sidewalk, well, maybe you did stop to wonder about what sorts of dirt and dust molecules were seeping into your body. But for most of us, especially when we’re in our own homes, the quality of the air we’re breathing is not a big consideration--or not even a consideration at all.

The truth of the matter is, the quality of air indoors (even in seemingly clean homes) can actually be far poorer than that of even the biggest, most industrialized, and dirtiest urban centers! To put that in plainer language: the air in your home could be worse for your health than the air you breathe walking through New York City or Beijing or San Francisco.
What causes such potent and potentially harmful indoor pollution? For starters, the indoor usage of substances like cigarettes and cigars, paint, coal, furniture polish, cleaning fluids, asbestos, space heaters, and so on, can create a build-up of hazardous particles. The degree of severity often depends on whether or not there is adequate ventilation--how much outdoor air can get into the house, and vice versa. A home with very poor ventilation will pose a much worse health threat to its inhabitants than a home with lots of open windows and excellent ventilation. That’s not to say that homes with good ventilation can’t still be polluted--in fact, they certainly can be.
Because most of us spend most of our time inside, rather than out of doors, the build-up of chemical and other airborne pollutants can pose serious health risks, triggering various ailments over time. This is especially true when the inhabitants of a home are elderly, chronically ill, or very young, or if they already have certain types of respiratory disease.

The particular physical response depends on the type of contaminant. Biological pollutants may provoke allergic reactions, while types of tobacco smoke and other contaminants can trigger asthma attacks or create asthmatic conditions. Molds and mildews can spread more serious health problems, and the presence of contaminants like carbon monoxide can even result in death if the proper alert system (a carbon monoxide detector) is not in place and fully functioning.

The good news is that you don’t have to live with hazardous air. Just recognizing the possibility of indoor air pollution is the first step toward creating an environment that is free of hazardous airborne particles. Read the related articles on air purifiers and air quality to learn what steps you can take to achieve cleaner air and a healthier lifestyle.
